At Hiworth College, we see language as the bridge between students and the world around them. It is how they learn, express ideas, lead discussions, and connect with different cultures. That is why our Department of Languages blends the best of the British and Nigerian curriculla to give students a strong foundation for both local exams and international opportunities.
What we offer
English Language & Literature-in-English
English runs through everything we do. From Year 7 up to WASSCE and IGCSE, students work on reading with understanding, writing with clarity, and speaking with confidence. We use a mix of classic and modern texts, creative writing tasks, and practical grammar lessons so students don’t just pass exams, they learn to communicate well.
French
French is introduced as a core subject in Years 7 to 9, with the option to continue in senior classes. Lessons are hands-on and conversation-focused, so students actually learn to use the language, not just memorise it. Along the way, they also get a feel for Francophone culture, which opens up more options for university and work later on.
Yoruba and Igbo
We believe students should be proud of their roots and able to communicate with family and community. That’s why we offer Yoruba and Igbo across Junior and Senior levels. Lessons cover literature, oral traditions, and grammar, and students can take these subjects in external exams if they choose.
How we make it work
We focus on real skills students will use every day. That means plenty of practice in writing, speaking, and listening, plus targeted support for exams. We also bring language to life through debates, drama, creative writing competitions, and cultural events like French Day and Mother Tongue Day. And for students who need extra help or want to go further, we run small group sessions to give them that attention.
Our aim is simple: by the time students leave Hiworth, they should be able to think clearly, write well, speak confidently, and engage respectfully with people from different backgrounds.
